My doctor prescribed some hefty antibiotics (because I've had so many upper respiratory/sinus infections over the course of my life that normal antibiotics don't work).
I'm loving novel version of The DaVinci Code way more than the movie (which, despite Tom Hanks not-so-attractive presence, I happen to love).

The Bad:

I have an upper respiratory infection.

I just finished reading Death du Jour, the second novel in the Tempe Brennan series by Kathy Reichs (the book series the tv show Bones is loosely--very loosely--based on). Now, I like the series, don't get me wrong. But Reichs uses one technique that really bothers me. She withholds information from the audience as her characters uncover it. It's frustrating and a cheap ploy to keep the readers reading. Also, it's the most obvious and amateur way to create mystery without employing any sort of talent or refined ability. I'm not saying the author should lay bare every single secret of the series/novel from page one. What I am saying, however, is that the author should reveal the mysteries to the audience as he/she reveals them to the characters. It's natural that way. Like my Creative Writing professor said, "If the author knows it, so should the reader."

I mean, even Laurell K. Hamilton doesn't do that. She skimps on characterization and plot, but she doesn't use the cheap-and-easy-mystery ploy (she instead occupies her readers with overdone smut and violence). In fact, of all the books I've read, I think Reichs' novels are the only ones that use that particular trick. I haven't read all the books in the world, obviously, but I have read quite a few books (though most are not what would be considered "classics" or having any real literary value).

While the plot-lines in Reichs' first two Tempe Brennan novels (those are the only ones I've read so far) are rich and well developed and the characterization is natural, she uses that nerve-grating cheap ploy that makes me wonder how the hell she ever got those novels published. And what the hell was her editor thinking when he/she let that past him/her?

Overall, I like what's been done with the tv series a whole lot more than the novels (so far, that is). Maybe they get better as time progresses.

I am sick of all of my friends hating themselves! I know everyone is down on themselves because the world is bad and mean to all of us, a lot. However, I can think of a million things I love about everyone who is my friend. I'm going to write some things I love about myself, and then I want you all to reply with ten things you love about yourselves, too. Yes, it's a little like group therapy. However, you need to do it! Do it!!!!

Ten Things I Like About Me:

1. I am a damn good cook.
2. I'm almost always honest--even when it would benefit me to lie.
3. I'm compassionate (most of the time).
4. I have gorgeous hair.
5. I can usually figure out the mystery way before I finish the book/movie.
6. I'm good at memorizing random facts (I kick ass at most trivia games).
7. I've been told that the dialog in my stories sounds like people actually talk.
8. I am an excellent bullshitter. (I wrote a paper once that was, to be honest, mostly rushed and not very well researched. I got a C on it instead of failing because it was, to paraphrase my professor's critique, good bullshit.)
9. I can read a 300 page book in about four hours.

Best. Crack!Fic. Ever.

No, seriously, I think I just read the best crack!fic I've ever read. Well, one of the best, at least. It's a DW fic with Ten, Rose, and The Master. Well, technically it's a series of three stories, but they're one chapter each. It's called Chance Encounters and is located on Teaspoon. And it's a crossover with Supernatural.

Actually, I think I read one last night that just might top that. It's also a DW fic series starring Ten, Rose, and The Master. Human Women, Tea Time, Fiery Death, and a drabble called Ten Points. 6/25/08 There is more! Present and accounted for. 8/13/08 And more! The light fantastic.

Oooh. If you know of any other wonderfully cracky fics involving The Doctor, Rose, and The Master, do let me know (though, preferably ones with Doctor/Rose action...).

Also, In Plain Sight premieres tonight! I've promised to watch it with the parents, but I still think it'll be enjoyable (right up until the moment where Dad inevitably starts talking through the dialog we're trying to listen to, then I shall retire to my room, sulk a bit, and continue watching.)

I can't wait to see how Vizardizing Shinji (et al) fits into the Unholy Alliance's plans. Because you know it wasn't random. There's going to be a specific, calculated reason for taking each of the Vizards and making them what they are.

Also, I have an idea as to why Urahara left SS. And why Tessai came with him: Hyori and Yamamoto's refusal to allow him to assist his lieutenant. I mean, I'm sure there was more, but that was probably one of the catalyzing events to it.

Little Nanao-chan broke my heart with the way she was waiting for Lisa. Shunsui's reassurance that Lisa would be back...damn. That's a promise that's going to bite him in the ass big time.

This is an actual letter from an Austin woman sent to American company Proctor and Gamble regarding their feminine products. She really gets rolling after the first paragraph. It's PC Magazine's 2007 editors' choice for best webmail-award-winning letter:

I have been a loyal user of your 'Always' maxi pads for over 20 years and I appreciate many of their features. Have you ever been reading this awesome piece of fanfic, with an absolutely wonderful concept that, ok, maybe you've read before but not quite like this? Don't you just hate it when, as you're reading along, totally engrossed, picturing it all in your head, all of a sudden it's like BAM! typo? Or, well, improper vocabulary.

I certainly do. One of my biggest pet-peeves has got to be definitely. Except people spell it defiantly. Which is so a different word. I see that in a sentence where it is utterly obvious that the author meant to use definitely and I end up hopping completely out of the story and ranting about beta readers, spell-check, and a dictionary.

So, anonymous fanfic author on Teaspoon, here's a lesson:

Defiantly = derived from Defiance
Definitely = derived from Definite

So, if you're saying your character is very sure of something, it'd be correct to say they're definitely certain about whatever it is.
