Shipping!

A poll on shipping (because I'm a curious glutton for punishment). Thanks to my f-list for helping me sort out the questions.

Also, if you could answer each question (even if it's to say "I'm not going to answer this questin") I'd really appreciate it (that way the results won't be skewed one way or the other).

Before we even go there, no ship-bashing in the comments. All ship-bashing comment threads will be frozen (not deleted). You can talk about ships you don't like; just don't be malicious about the ship(s) and/or insult people who do ship that way.

What would you say is your main fandom (ie, the one you participate in most)? (Type "n/a" if you decline to answer this question.)

What would you say your OTP is in that fandom (OTP = One True Pairing)? (Type "n/a" if you decline to answer this question.)

If you ship OT3s, what would you say your OT3 is in your main fandom? (Type "n/a" if you decline to answer this question and/or don't have an OT3 in your main fandom.)

Anything else?

Thanks for taking my poll!

I like polls, so I had fun filling this out. I just hope that no one nags you about the questions or anything.
Personally I think that shipping has a negative stigma only if you take it seriously. And it counts toward all ships, all pairings... het, yaoi and yuri. The very moment you become a crusader for it, you have just made yourself into what is lauded as the rabid shipper. Alot of people think that yaoi is the most rabid, and it is true (because of the age group.. girls just trying to get in touch with their sexuality), however I've seen rabidity in all genres.

If everyonne adopted a 'live and let live' mentaility, there wouldn't be shipwars, and thus fandoms wouldn't be divided over what is fanon and what is canon. At the very heart fandom wank lives and breathes on it.

Personally I think ship wars are stupid. I like what I like, and if someone tries to convert me otherwise, I just give them ye old internet finger and go on my own way, because I sure as hell could be doing better things then arguing with a crazed fan.
I agree with your comment.
The only thing that has a negative impact on a fandom is the actions of fans. Written/acted characters can't cause the turmoil because they're not real. Fans are the ones bringing in their set of values and experiences, superimposing them. Pairings are only a symptom of the problem: the lack of rational communication from different factions of fans.

I will say I don't go to Dr. Who shipping comms, for the most part, because the frenzied behavior. And on LJ, I rarely visit the pairing comms because of outrageous, and usually hurtful behavior.

The stigma belongs on the fans interpretations, not the pairing (be it slash/het/femmeslash/all three). For me, the character reactions and thoughts are the driving force, not if they fit into a neat little box of perceived sexuality. I can like Sheppard with McKay, or with Hot Female #2. Or I can like Rose with Martha or Nine. OR Denise and Frank or Denise and Claudia Joy. It's a matter of what appeals to me.

Of course I break the mold because I love gen, too. I actually I read as much, if not not more gen, and write it. I can't write ships, so I stick to gen. Though, I will allude to previous or crushes, but they're not the main focus. Just insights.

That said, I do think femmeslash's acceptance depends on the fandom. Like Xena fandom would be more accepting than say current bandom's. In a large fandom like HP, femmeslash isn't entirely ignored and seems to have a following. Or it did a couple years ago when I was involved. And Buffy had a high percentage because of interactions with Faith and Buffy, or the canon Willow/Tara, or Willow/Kennedy. I think it depends somewhat on the ratio of source girls. High ratio, higher percent of acceptance. In the same turn, in something like SGA, the predominate ship is McKay/Sheppard, so it might not be as a popular or accepted because the girls tend to canonically be ignored for long periods of time.
I voted "No" on the stigma question, although it could be "Depends on the fandom" also. I am just not so familiar with most fandoms except for Harry Potter Slash. HP Slash has many fics with a secondary het pairing (Hermione/Ron, Draco/Pansy, Bellatrix/Others etc). Doesn't seem to be a problem. Femslash is ok too, even though I don't read it.

I sort of feel that ship-bashing is done by more immature fans (of any age, hehe!). Any ship is a good ship, all ships have their place in fandoms.
Ooops...made a bit of boo boo. My OTP should be hg/ss and ot3 should be ss/hg/lm. *facepalm*
Ah, no worries. If you want to go back and fix it, you can (just click on the "Poll #whatever"...or here, and click "Fill Out Poll" and just switch those two around).
Thanks. It's all fixed now.
Very interesting poll. :-) I agree with some of the things that's been said. I don't think it's the ship type that has a negative stigma, but the fans who take their ship way too seriously. Granted, I have seen websites that absolutely refused slash/femmeslash and are even hostile to it, or vice versa, and I have seen animosity towards one kind of ship by a large group of shippers. But, the stigma really comes from the ship wars and fighting, may it be a het, slash, femmeslash, canon, or fanon ship.

It's all about maturity, and I don't mean age. :-) I've seen 30 to 50 year-olds fighting like rabid dogs, making asses of themselves, and then I've seen fans in their early teens debating politely and intelligently. So, maturity comes into play.

I've seen so many shipping wars, and I think they're disgusting. They're unnecessary headache. Whenever someone tries to argue with me about shipping - and I have many stories I could tell - I just roll my eyes and go back to what I was doing. Shipping to me is, after all, all about having fun (so is gen!)

Happy shipping! :-)
I'm only in the HP but I'd say there is definitely an anti-het segment. Or at least people use terms to describe het, like gross, that I never see used for slash. It makes me a bit sad since this seems to come from women who are predominately heterosexual, if not in theory then at least in practice.
That sort of thing is what gave me the idea for this poll. Someone on el-jay said something along the lines of "OMG! I wrote scary het! Weird, right?" and I was all fired to write an essay about it...and then just fizzled out, because it probably would've been right up there with "so, what are your thoughts on yaoi?", you know? Hence, the poll. Also, it's always more fun to see what people think without putting my own bias in.
I think a lot of it depends on the fandom. It also depends on what corner of that fandom you hang out in. I see anti-het in slash groups and anti-slash (though less of it, due to concerns about being labeled a homophobe) in het groups. Femslash seems to carry a lot of stigma in most fandoms, though somewhat less in others.
It also depends on what corner of that fandom you hang out in.

Yes, that! In most fandoms, even smallish ones, with some looking you can usually find a group that suits your shipping tastes.
LOL hi. Cute poll... I dunno if I did it right.

In a nutshell? I think fandom should be big enough for everyone to have their own little corner/sandbox/whatever. I scroll past what does not appeal to me, and read/view what does.

:D
Also whoops, for "main fandom" I should have just said BLEACH, but I was being too specific. :X
I do see some quite rampant anti-het in some fandoms (not in mine, luckily, since het is virtually all I write) but I tend to find femmeslash is the worst off, in my opinion. It's the one I see the least of the three and I get a lot of 'meh' toward it, not out hate, but as if it's just not worth doing or something.
Fun poll. It was hard to pick which fandom is my main one. I ended up going with HP because although I love Buffy just as much, I'm a big multishipper in Buffy. I'd never be able to narrow down my favorite pairings.

I do have an OT3 for Buffy, though (Buffy/Spike/Angel).
(here via [info]meta_roundup)

I said "depends on the fandom" for the first question because I have recently discovered that in the Death Note fandom, most of them frown upon what is the main het ship of Light/Misa - I probably still would have said that in answer to that question though, even if I hadn't found that out.

Also, I could've ticked "slash" on the "how do you ship" question, but I didn't, since I only have three slash ships compared to het ones and...it's more that I like the idea (or it amuses me) rather than I actively ship them.

This was an interesting poll! Thanks for posting it :)
I don't ship at all in any fandom, but I also do not exclusively read gen. I'll try most pairings if the writing's good and if the author can convince me that the pairing makes sense in the context of the story. I occasionally see some pairings in a fandom as easier to justify in a fic, but that doesn't mean that I care if those pairings are written or not or that all renderings of that pairing will convince me.

I just wanted to comment that reading gen exclusively is not the only alternative to having a OTP or OT3. I do read gen. I also read m/f, m/m, f/f, threesomes, moresomes, whatever comes my way and appeals at the moment. There are some fandoms in which I avoid sexually explicit fic but don't mind lighter relationship or romance stuff (though I usually prefer other plot, too).
I ship whatever pops into my hairy little brain, be it het, slash, threesomes, or Just Plain Wrong. What I call my OTPs are more Things I Like More Than Others.

I think the whole My Shipping Genre Is Oppressed thing is very silly. Slightly less silly from the slashfen, but still silly. I have never seen anyone decry all het unless they were slightly nuts. I have seen people decry all slash; usually they are either a) homophobes, b) under the impression that all slash is over-the-top seme/uke yaoi fluff, or c) both. I don't think femslash is acknowledged enough to be bashed. :D
